Chapter One

One-Point Perspective

Look at Vaughn's pencil sketch of this building. Every horizontal line on the walls, floors, and roof rushes toward a single vanishing point on the left — that's one-point perspective.

What you're seeingThe red lines trace the actual construction lines Vaughn drew — the roofline, floor edges, window sills — all meeting at one point on the horizon.

Find the horizon line — the blue line is eye level. Notice how it cuts across the building at mid-height.

Find the vanishing point (VP) — the red dot on the left. Vaughn placed it far off the building edge for drama.

Trace the receding lines — every horizontal edge of the building aims at that single VP.

The front face stays flat — windows and doors on the front wall use only horizontal and vertical lines.

Chapter Two

Two-Point Perspective

Look at Vaughn's painting of this old Caribbean house. The porch recedes to the left, the right wing recedes to the right — two vanishing points. This is 2PP in action.

What you're seeingThe blue lines follow the porch roof, deck, and railing — all meeting at VP-Left. The red lines follow the right wing's roof and walls — all meeting at VP-Right.

Find the horizon line — in this painting it sits roughly at the base of the house, your eye level as you stand in the yard.

Trace the porch roof edge — extend that line far left. That's VP-Left (blue).

Trace the right wing's roofline — extend it far right. That's VP-Right (red).

Every horizontal edge of the house follows one of these two directions. Nothing is accidental.

Chapter Three — Advanced

Three-Point Perspective

Look up at a skyscraper — its sides taper upward to a third vanishing point. Used for dramatic worm's-eye or bird's-eye views.

The dramatic viewSkyscrapers, aerial city views, extreme close-ups. Three VPs — nothing is truly vertical anymore.

VP-Left and VP-Right on the horizon — same as 2PP.

Add VP-Up far above the horizon — a third point.

All "vertical" edges now angle toward VP-Up. Nothing is truly vertical.

Corner edge goes to VP-Up, not straight up.

Chapter Four — Project

City Street in Two-Point Perspective

A city block is the ultimate 2PP exercise. All buildings share the same two VPs — only heights change. Click each step to build the scene.

Golden ruleEvery building on the same block shares the exact same two VPs. Lock them in first, then vary heights freely.

Horizon + two VPs far off each side. Low horizon = dramatic street view.

Street & curbs — road and sidewalk edges converge to both VPs.

Building corner verticals — vary heights. Connect each top/bottom to both VPs.

Far edges & rooflines — cut across guide lines with a vertical to end each building.

Windows — horizontal lines aim at the same VP as the wall they sit on.

Cornices & awnings — decorative ledges follow the VP lines too.

Shade & render — hatch shadow faces, add lamppost, figures.

Pencil tipConstruction lines = feather-light. Final outlines = firm pressure. Erase guides last.

Acrylic School — Lesson One

One-Point Perspective in Paint

Vaughn's acrylic painting "To St. Elizabeth" — a Jamaican road pulling you through a stone tunnel arch. Everything in this painting rushes toward one single point. This is 1PP at its most dramatic.

What makes this acrylicNotice the bold, confident strokes. Acrylic dries fast — Vaughn had to commit to each decision quickly. The lush greens were built up in layers, lights over darks.

Find the vanishing point — it sits dead centre in the tunnel opening. Every element aims at it.

The road is your guide — both edges and the dashed centreline converge perfectly to the VP.

The tunnel arch frames it — a circle in 1PP stays a circle. Only the rectangular bridge walls above recede.

The truck is the payoff — tiny, centred, bathed in light beyond the darkness. Vaughn placed it exactly on the VP to draw your eye through.

Toggle Guides off — study how Vaughn handled the tropical foliage. No perspective rules there — pure observation and bold acrylic strokes.
